The 1880 U.S. census lists a certain boarding house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The place seems respectable enough; it houses a real estate dealer, a lawyer, a private secretary, an agent for type writer [sic], bookseller, cloth merchant, and a silverware dealer. But the landlady (who presumably provided the information for the enumerator) seems to have found one occupant less than upright — she listed poor Emil VON CUNDECK’s occupation as “Unknown — Probably Swindler!”
