    • Dr. Ronald R. DiNella, age 80, of Muscle Shoals, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at home with his family.
      A memorial service in celebration of his life will be at St. James United Methodist Church on Cox Creek Boulevard in Florence on Sunday, April 6, 2008, at 4 p.m., with Pastor Keith Pope officiating.
      Dr. DiNella was preceded in death by his parents, Amadeo and Vincenzina DiNella, and his sister, Flora Gianni.
      A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. DiNella graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received his Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, Tenn., and served as a resident in Neurosurgery at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Children's Hospital Medical Center at Harvard University in Boston, Mass.
      While at Vanderbilt, Dr. DiNella was also a pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellow, instructor and research associate. In 1964, he received an appointment as assistant professor of Physiology as well as an appointment as instructor in Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical School. He was in private practice in Pulaski, Tenn., from 1965 until 1970 before a surgical residency at St. Luke Medical and Research Center in Kansas City, Mo.
      Dr. DiNella practiced general surgery privately in the Shoals Area from 1974 until his retirement in 1993.
      Since retiring, he enjoyed teaching health classes at the UNA Institute for Learning in Retirement for eight years, as well as gardening and grandparenting.
      He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gerry DiNella; brother, John DiNella (Evelyn); sister, Gina Chillem; sons, Ron DiNella, of San Diego, Calif., Dr. Ken DiNella (Cindy), of Americus, Ga., Dr. Tom DiNella (Leslie), of Nashville, Tenn., Glenn DiNella (Margaret), of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter, Ellen Reinlie (Bob), of Florence, Ala.; and 10 grandchildren.
      His family is thankful for the care and concern from his pastor, friends, and hospice caregivers during his brief illness. Most of all, his family deeply appreciates the prayers of many as Dr. DiNella recently received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
      The family requests memorials to be sent to Hospice of the Shoals or the Humane Society of Colbert County.
