Alma Culps in household of Sterling A Culps Obituary - Alma Louise Whitt, 98, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 in Granite City. She was born August 1, 1912 in Madison County, Alabama, a daughter of the late Sterling Arthur and Minnie Louise (Kolle) Culps. She married Joe Malcolm Whitt on November 20, 1932 in Ardmore, Alabama and he preceded her in death on January 28, 1981.
Alma enjoyed her days of gardening, embroidery and quilting. She was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church in Madison and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends. She is survived by three daughters, Eva (Joseph) Podnar of Camano Island, Washington; Margaret Hahn of Granite City and Shirley Belcher of Shreveport, Louisiana; eleven grandchildren, Neal (Joyce) Whitt, Alan (Carlene) Whitt, Deborah (Michael) Becherer, Chrissy (Scott) Tisdale, Neil (Dennetta) Podnar, Frank (Debbie) Hahn, Cynthia (David) Hahn'96Jones, Melinda (Richard) Oliver, Charles (Stephanie) Hester, Kim (Scott) Warhurst; Nicole (James) Fleetwood; twenty-six great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister, Mary Rogers of Shelbyville, Tennessee; other extended family and friends. In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Joade Whitt; three sons-in-law, Charles Richard Hester, Frank J. Hahn and Gene Belcher; one daughter-in-law, Audrey Whitt; two grandchildren, Mary C. Hahn and Julianna Podnar; three brothers, Jerome, Earlie and Newton Culps and one sister, Minnie Rogers.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Dan Penrod officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Temple Baptist Church and Gateway Regional Hospice and may be accepted at the funeral home.
