The Republican Record - John W. Bricken, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Granville Bricken, of this city, died at his home in the Santa Fe Addition, Tuesday morning, September 8, 1908, at five o'clock, of heart trouble.
John William Bricken was born in Leslie township on September 26, 1874, and was 33 years, 11 months and 14 days of age at the time of his death. At the age of 13 years he moved with his parents to Carrollton, where he attended the public schools and grew to manhood.
On the first day of November, 1905, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Harper, of this county. One child was born to them, that died at the age of 13 months. Besides his sorrowing wife he leaves a father, mother, and one brother and one sister.
John has been in poor health for nearly a year, but was able to continue his work at the mill about 8 months ago, when he was forced to give up his work and try to regain his health. Last February he had a severe spell of pneumonia, which left him in a very weak condition. After this sick spell it was found that his lungs had become effected and that his heart was in a bad condition. During the summer months he seemed to grow some better but never as well as he was before his spell of pneumonia.
Last Saturday he was about the streets as usual and the following day he visited his father. Monday he complained of a severe headache and was sick at his stomach, and he breathed with considerable difficulty. A physician was called and administered some temporary relief, and during the hours of the night his father watched by his bedside. His faithful wife was on the bed beside him, completely worn out by her long waiting on him, and she was sleep. John appeared to be sleeping naturally for several hours, but along toward morning he seemed to rouse for a moment, drew a deep breath and then passed away.
John Bricken was so well known in this city, that it is not necessary for us to comment on his life. Suffice to say, he was a good citizen, a good husband, and a boy and man that everybody liked who knew him. He was of a jovial disposition, had no bad habits, and was a model young man in every sense of the term.
The funeral services were held at the family residence on Ely street Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by REv. Marvin, of the Memorial Methodist church of which deceased was a member, after which the remains were taken to Oak Hill cemetery for interment.
