  • Notes
    • Sallie Ann Stewart was the firstborn child of Joseph Jackson and Sara Belle Ham Stewart, arriving Dec 1842.
      1850 Census shows J J 28, Sarah 24, Ann 7, Reuben 4, and Martha 2.

1860 Census shows J J 39, Sarah 35, Ann 16, Reuben 14, Martha 11, William 6, Rhoda 3, and Missouri 8 months. Still a typical Alabama family for the times.
      1870 Census shows J J 59, S 40 , Ann 25, Martha 20, William 16, Rhoda 12, Belle 10, Nancy 8, Joseph 5, and, glory be, No Name 2. PLUS, Reuben 24, his wife Amanda 24, and their children George 7, Jack 4, and Frank 2.

Now, comes 5 Jan 1877, when Ann Stewart at age 34 married Joel Hudson Sizemore, a widower. When she moved out of the Stewart household, she left behind Martha 28, Rhody 23, Belle 20, Nancy 18, Joseph 15, and Larkin 12.

The home she moves into has three girls and a boy who have been motherless for two years. Her step-children were Annie Pearl 16, Drucilla 13, Rufus 10, and Martha 8. The 1880 Census shows nothing unusal, Annie Pearl married in 1879 so there are only three children at home and maybe things have settled in.

By 1900, a lot has happened. Joel has developed "bilious fever" at 72 and George Jerman Sizemore is living with them, probably to help with the farmwork. Both Annie Pearl AND her husband have died, and their children, Willie Belle Middleton age 13 and Earnest 9 are being mothered by Sallie Ann, their step-grandmother. They've been there at least two years, maybe four, and Sallie Ann is 57 herself.

Now move on to 1910. Joel has been dead for two years. and Rufus's wife Virgie has been dead for two years. Ann continues to take care of people, living with step-son Rufus and his son Raymond 21, and his daughter Nina Bell 18, her step-grandchildren.

So, I count at least 15 children Sallie Ann Stewart mothered directly, via brothers/sisters/step-children/step-grandchildren; then a mother that was likely tired and worn out most of the time, and an old husband who got bilious fever, and the children of two stepchildren that died; plus all the other step-grandchildren that were coming and going from time to time.

Alabama Death records say she died 27 Jan 1916, at age 73. But on a genealogy chart, she is considered childless.
