      James D. NORDYKE

A brief history of the families of the Turners and Nordykes written by Rev. H. H. Turner:

           Paternal grandparents:

           1. Thomas Turner paternal grandfather of the writer was born in the State of Virginia in 1776 died 1856 80 years. His father John Turner was a native of Scotland emigrated to America in Colonial times.

In 1804 grandfather married Elizabeth B. Lightfoot whose parents were among the Colonists and were natives of Wales. Grandmother was born in 1783 in the State of Virginia. Died in 1854 aged 72. Their remains lie together side by side in the Bratton cemetery two miles north of Hickory, MO. having been married 50 yrs. There came into their house nine children five sons and four daughters.  The names & birth of their children follow Lavina born 1806, James born in 1808, John born in 1811, Julia born 1818, Sanford 1814, Elizabeth 1816, Richard 1818, Emily 1821, Alfred 1823.

Lavina married a man by name in Indiana named Henry Hix. They raised of family of four sons & three daughters. Three sons loyal to their country enlisted in the Union Army in 1862. Two of them were slain in the battle of Bull Run. The girls married and lived in Rush Co., Ind.

James the second child is my father. I will mention him in another place. John the third married Malinda Cassel. They emigrated to Grundy Co., Mo. Some of the family now live in Iowa.

The fourth child julia married Benjamin Kendal. They never had any children. Sanford the fifth child married Rachel Fleenor. He was among the 49rs to Cal. leaving his wife & three smal children to be cared for by my father. He never returned I was five years my father cared for the family after which they went to Indiana to her people.

The sixth child Elizabeth married Joseph Carter. They moved to Iowa from Mo. in the 58(?). Uncle Richard married Eliza Ann Nordyke. They had two children. Uncle became attacked with epilectic fits and it was necessary for some one to be with him which was my duty. One day he went to town on horse back only a short distance. He fell from the horse into a mud puddle and found dead. Aunt Elia married Thomas Harper and moved to Oregon. Aunt Emily married Richard Sharon. She died in Randolph Co., Mo.

Uncle Alfrid was a soldier in the Mexican war. Then with Uncle Sanford went to Cal. for gold. Three years later he returned to his home in Mo. and married Martha Atkinson. They had two sons
           & one daughter.

           II Maternal grandparents:

James R. Nordyke maternal grandfather of the writer was born in Virginia 1784. His parents were natives of England. In 1811 he married Leticia F. Smith who decended from Cap. John Smith native of England. They had ten children, Jane born 1813, Bazzell S. 1815, Jarial D. 1817, Israel S., 1819 Nancy 1821, Eliza Ann 1820, William 1823, Benjamin 1825, John 1827, Letcia F. 1830.
Jane the oldest was my mother. I will notice in another place.

Bazzel married a woman whose name I do dot recall. They had one child Rachel.

In the year 1851. Uncle Bazzel wife & child his brothers William, Benjah, John and his sister Letticia F. and his aged mother all started to California. All reached the gold fields except Uncle Bazzel, who died enroute at Red River and was burried there. Jariel third child married Rosanna Applegate. They had five children. Three sons and two daughters. Bazzel & J. R. Nordyke live in Mercer Co., Mo. J. R. is a baptist minister that need not be ashamed and is able to rightly divide the word of truth.

Note: Mother didn't finish the copying of grandfather's record. Perhaps the task became too difficult. I wish I'd known and had offered to help.
