Article 14 of the treaty allowed Choctaw Indians who chose to remain in the East and not immigrate to the Indian Territory to claim special allotments. Much of these allotments were in the form of land, but some were for Scrip.  The United States appointed several commissions to rule on these various claims.  The time period covered is around 1837 to 1854.  These dates may vary as some of the documents have information in them that were added much later, some as late as 1906. Located within the Records of the Bureau of Land Management, Record Group 49, are copies of scrip certificates surrendered for land.  These records primarily cover the period 1843 to 1849.  These certificates were given to Choctaw Indians who could not be given their allotments from the treaty of 1830, commonly called the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek.  A special act of Congress (dated August 23, 1842) provided for the issuance of this scrip. What this entitled the bearer to was selected public lands located in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, or Arkansas.  Two certificates were needed to make the claim.  The second certificate was not presented unless the Choctaw Indian moved to the Indian Territory.   On March 3, 1845 it was enacted that instead of giving the scrip certificates to the Choctaw, the value of the scrip would be determined and that amount as wellas interest on it would be paid to the Choctaw Indians.  These records should be checked if one feels the person or persons being researched remained in the East. >From the book...
