  • Notes
    • Louis Henry Reese was born in Marion Co., AL, oldest known son of Jesse and Rebecca Reese, both believed to have been born in TN. Louis Henry, like his father, was a farmer. I have not yet found any record of Louis having served in the military during the Civil War.

Louis married 25 July 1867 in Fayette Co., AL to Mary Jane Dodson, born 25 Apr 1846 in Alabama, daughter of Lemuel Dodson b. SC and Jane Catherine "Jennie" Reed b. TN.

According to the 1880, 1900 and 1910 AL & TX census, Louis and Mary Jane were the parents of the thirteen children listed above. ]] I haven't found the 1870 census record yet, and that wretched fire-destroyed 1890 census leaves a lot of unanswered questions! If my aunt, Mrs. Carol Webb was correct in her conclusion that the three sons of Jesse and Rebecca Reese all moved their families to Texas together - collective census, birth and death records indicate they most likely made their journey between 1894 and 1896. Mary Jane Dodson Reese died 4 Aug 1897, less than two weeks after their 30th wedding anniversary, and is buried at Sand Springs Cemetery, Wood Co., TX.

When Mary Jane died, Louis Henry had a houseful of children still at home. By the end of the year, he apparently traveled back to Alabama where, according to Fayette Co. marriage records, on 27 Dec. 1897 he married his wife's widowed younger sister, Louisa Florentine Dodson, b. 11 Aug 1850, Alabama. On the 1900 census Louisa is shown to have had one child, still living, but who does not appear to be in this household. Her first husband is unknown. She is listed as single and living in her parents home in 1880 Fayette AL census. We do not know who/when she may have married or what happened to her 1st husband or that unnamed child. Drat that 1890 census - Again!!

Also on the 1900 census with Louis and Louisa, there are three additional children in the household listed as grandchildren; Walter 9 b. AL, Elzora 6 b. TX, and Clifford 5 b. TX. Elzora is listed as born Sept 1893 in TX. There is not a different surname listed, so it is assumed these are children of a son of Louis and Mary Jane, but it is not known who their parents are. Oddly, these same 3 are listed not as grandchildren, but sons and daughter in the household of Louis and Louisa on the 1910 census! Was this carelessness on the part of the enumerator or had Louis and Louisa actually adopted them? According to the Wood County Democrat newspaper, a Miss Elzora Reese married Hugh C. Adams January 15, 1915 in Van Zandt County Texas. On September 9, 1916, Clifford Reese married Elizabeth Ashley in Wood County, Texas.

There is also a Bertha age 19 listed on the 1910 census who is not listed by that name on the 1900. Was this the Rosa S. listed b. Sept 1891 on the 1900, but not listed by that name on the 1910?

Louis and Louisa were attending services at the Baptist Church in Hawkins City in 1915. Louis Henry Reese died in Wood Co. TX and is buried at Sand Springs Cemetery. According to research of Mrs. Ann Reese, Louisa Florentine Dodson Reese died 5 Aug 1936 and is buried at Hawkins City Cemetery, Wood Co., Texas. Louis and Louisa were married about 27 years before his passing. [1]
