    • Funeral services for Mr. John L. Harkness, age 86 of Fayette, were held Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 2:00 pm from Nelson Funeral Home chapel. Burial followed in Camp Comfort Cemetery. Glen Edmonds officiated.

      Mr. Harkness was born November 14, 1922 to Lossen and Lula Savannah Aldridge Harkness. He passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008 at his residence.

      Mr. Harkness enlisted for World War II at Fort McClellan, Alabama 9 January 1943. Enlistment was for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. He reached the rank of PFC while serving in the U.S. Army earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Eloise Atkinson Harkness, son: Ronald Wayne Harkness and grandson: Jonathan Gabriel Fuqua.

      Survivors include two sons: Kenneth Eric "Rick" Harkness of Fayette, William Dennis Harkness of Fayette, three daughters: Marla Lynn Fuqua of Hartselle, Janie Cheryl Franklin of Ft. Worth, TX, Donnise Perry of Tuscaloosa, sister: Thelma Valerine Edmonds, 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

      Pallbearers were: Seth Harkness, Shane Harkness, Joshua Fuqua, Kendal Harkness, Scott Perry, Allan Perry, and Bobby Sekaquaptewa.
