Obituary 20 Jan 1955 Athens, Limestone, Alabama, United States
The Alabama Courier - Earnest Ruf, 71, was laid to rest today in the Germantown Cemetery after funeral services were conducted from the Sand Springs Lutheran Church, a building in which he donated $8000 to build only a few months ago. He died from a heart attack while in Athens. He collasped on the courthouse lawn Tuesday morning and died a few minutes later. It was in September that Mr. Ruf talked to a representative of this newspaper about the church which he was so proudly having built. He was about to realize a dream and he lived long enough to see it come to pass. He told of the old log building used in the bygone days where the congregation met for church services and during the week classed in arithmetic, reading and writing were held. He smiled as he remembered how the building was put together, log by log, each donated by friends and neighbors in that 1890 community.
Mr. Ruf married 45 years ago and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bertha Barksdale Ruf. They had no children. The only other living relatives are six brothers, Paul, August, Herman, Richard, Carl and Willie, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eberhard and Rosine Ruf, a sister, Ida Wessler, and one brother, Henry Ruf.
