Notes - Will: book H, page 94, Bedford Co., Va.
The first White to Bedford County, Virginia was Captain Jacob White. He came from Buckingham County soon after the revolution. He was the son of Henry White. Henry moved to Bedford County in his old age. Henry White came from Buckingham to Bedford County about 1800, evidently to spend his declining years with his son, Jacob, who had preceded him several years. His will, dated August 18, 1800, and probated September 27, 1802, in Bedford (Will Book "B," page 366).
Jacob White, son of Henry White of Buckingham County, Virginia, came to Bedford Soon after the Revolutionary War, and settled near James River, in the northeastern part of the county. He bought, November 4, 1794, from Samuel Waddy 350 acres of land, adjoining Henry Hatcher, Thomas Hubbard, Edmund Winston and Charles Gwatkin. (Deed Book "J," page 164.) His second purchase was from Francis Halley in 1805 "West side of No Business Mountain and on waters of James River. Beginning at Jeremiah Hatcher's line." (Deed Book "K," page 1196.)
A historical sketch of Jacob Samuel White, grandson of Jacob White, in Hardesty's Encyclopedia, page 434, says: "His parents were natives of this (Bedford) County and his grandfather, after serving with distinction and with rank of captain through the greater part of the Revolutionary War, was an early and prominent settler here. The county was almost a wilderness when he came here, and with his own hands he cleared and improved the beautiful place on Otter Creek, where the subject of this sketch resides."
Served in the Revolutionary War with the rank of Captain and was a Justice of the Peace in Bedford County for a number of years.
The inscription on his tombstone reads:
