Notes - Houston served with Co. A, 48th Alabama Inf. during the Civil War, and filed for a soldier’s pension in 1913. He was on the Blount County Muster Roll of Capt. A. J. Allridge (or Allredge) Company of the 48th Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, in the service of the Confederate States for three years of during the war unless sooner discharged. He is listed along with his brothers Franklin and Charles and a Hastin Graves. Houston enlisted April 7, 1862. He was wounded at Manassas, and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland. He was on the list of killed and injured in Tallfarro's Brigade from the time General Lee took command at Gordonsville until the army left the valley camp near Snickersnec (?) in Jan. 1863. The roster shows last pay March 30, 1863. One report shows he was paroled and home on leave at time of surrender, and another report says he deserted. One record shows he was captured at Deep Bottom, VA, Aug. 14, 1864, and was held until the end of the Civil War, April 9, 1865. It is probable that some of these records belong to nephews or others of the same name. When he registered with the State of Alabama on 2 March 1921 as a pensioner of the State, all his children were living. Miss Alice Graves of Liberty, AL was listed as a mute; no indication was given that she was also blind.
